Burlington Event Photographer | Shaw 40th Anniversary

In December, Brian and I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph Mr. and Mrs. Shaw's 40th Anniversary Party. With the help of their two daughters and some of their closest friends, they walked into Fleming's Steakhouse and were completely surprised to see their friends and family waiting for them. It was a beautiful dinner, and I know both Brian & I were glad to have been able to photograph such a lovely family!

Melissa - Thank you for asking us to be a part of this beautiful evening, it was a pleasure meeting you all! :)

Focused on a Cure | Piggin' Out For Pink

Breast Cancer. Two words nobody likes to hear. Two words that affect 1 in 8 women, and their families.

Brian and I recently had the amazing opportunity to meet and document the stories of ten powerful women who have fought to keep breathing in their battle against cancer. Julie and her bag of tricks. Kim and the unfailing support of her husband. Rosemary and her continuous survival, support, strength. These three and many more remind us how strong we truly are and what faith, family, and friends can do for us.

Many many thanks to Karen Goforth of Irresistible Portraits, the woman behind this four year old organization. Last Friday, she hosted Piggin' Out for Pink - a fundraiser for Focused on A Cure. So many incredible sponsors joined together for a truly fantastic night at the Vintage Motor Club.

Sleepless in Seattle

“Well, it was a million tiny little things that, when you added them all up, they meant we were supposed to be together... and I knew it. I knew it the very first time I touched her. It was like coming home... only to no home I'd ever known... I was just taking her hand to help her out of a car and I knew. It was like... magic.”

- Sleepless in Seattle

For those of you who follow me on Twitter or Instagram, you probably were relatively aware that I was on the other side of the country a little over a week ago. And yes, I DO think a Sleepless in Seattle quote was called for and NOT corny. Mmmkay?

Anywho, I had the privilege of visiting my family and watching my aunt graduate from the University of Washington with her PhD!! Awesome, right? I was a majorly proud niece, I’ll tell you that. It was my first chance to see not only Seattle, but the West Coast, and I had a fabulous time. I fully intend to go back and do all the touristy Seattle things that people do, but for my first trip, I got a great glimpse of the city, and absolutely loved it, despite the four days of rain we enjoyed.

Here is a glimpse of my trip, in Instagram pictures, because now that I officially have an iPhone, I intend to take WAY more pictures. Sure I’m like two years behind but, better late than never right? Check it, ya'll! :)

Look, I guarantee there’ll be tough times. I guarantee that at some time, one or both of us is gonna want to get out of this thing. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life, because I know, in my heart, you’re the only one for me.

- Runaway Bride

May has been a whirlwind of activities, keeping us go go go! I've had everal chance to assist and work with some amazing photographers this month, including Karen Goforth of Irresistible Portraits and Jonathan McCardell of McCardell Photography! AND, we're excited to be sharing a super cute and fun senior session this week that we got to do in Mebane. Now with the exciting wedding of Candace & Scott coming up this weekend, I'm looking forward to a VERY exciting June!

To kick off this week, we are excited to see Kelsey & Brad's Elon Engagement on Vie D'Amour. We shot their engagement session last fall, and they just got married this month, so we are incredibly happy for them!

Hope you all have a fabulous week and end of May! :)

The Lucky One

You should be kissed every day, every hour, every minute.

- The Lucky One

Oh, how true that is! Thank you Nicholas Sparks, for giving me something to tell my husband every, single, day.

I saw The Lucky One over the weekend, and I have mixed feelings about it. I read the book a couple years ago and wasn't that in love with it. The movie wasn't exactly spectacular, but Zac Efron was quite the cutie, and he played the piano, so who cares?! Ha, I kid. It was a nice romantic reminder though, and even though I didn't cry, I did enjoy Zac Efron the movie!

So, public apology time! I promised an FAQ post last week, but I never had a chance to post it! I know, sad face. Fortunately, I will have that up on the schedule this week, for sure! So keep an eye out ya'll! :) In the meantime, I'll be sharing some images from a wedding I second shot for J. Darren Photography, last October at the gorgeous Hotel Concord. Here's a little sneaky peeky...

And in case you missed anything last week...

Have a Happy Monday!

What's On and Poppin'?

Have you noticed anything different on the blog lately?

Okay trick question. I haven't actually changed that much, so if you said yes, I'm either concerned by your lack of honestly, or impressed by your amazingly perceptive powers! There are minor changes popping up and I wanted to make sure you didn't miss them!

1. The "Pin-It" Button is here!

Yup, our website is slowly being integrated with Pinterest action buttons. If you're as obsessed as I am, then this will be verrrry useful! Blog posts will have a "pin-it" link above each photo, and all posts will have the pin bookmarklet along the bottom. So pin away! If you like it, share it with your friends and send them our way! :)

2. The Wedding Websites

I've mentioned this before, but we are really loving this new facet of our branding. We've got quite a few up now, and you can even visit a couple of them from our facebook page. If you're getting married and looking for a photographer, we LOOOVE offering this, and would love for you to take advantage of it! Our favorite features are:

  • Awesome Facebook integration
  • Easy access link to your proofing gallery (which still remain password protected)
  • A one-stop location for your family to see your wedding and engagement photos

If you want to peruse one more closely visit Crystal & Zaac's Wedding Website:

3. We're fully mobile now!

It's true! Our website is now HTML-5 and can be viewed on all platforms! Which we are thrilled to see, since both Brian & I use iPad's on a daily basis and know how frustrating flash is. But now there is nothing stopping you from checking out our portfolio any time you'd like!

If you haven't seen it yet, visit it now at:

And that's whats going on over here! We have a few other things we're working on, (as always) but that's what's on and popping right now. So go! Pin! Peruse! And when you're done, we'd love to hear what you think in the comments below.

Thank you for reading!

Oh my, I almost forgot... here's a sneak peek of our latest Chapel Hill, NC engagement. More to come this week!

I Heart Faces | Best Face of 2011

I admit, I LOVE this week's I Heart Faces challenge. I mean faces?! I GOT face photos! It's like, what we're all about! So when I read this weeks challenge, a couple of amazing photos immediately popped into my head. It was very hard to decide on just one, but I kept coming back to this one from a wedding I second shot for J. Darren Photography. The look in her eye as she gazes into the camera and the beautiful color in her eyes, it's so gorgeous! I love this photo.

Concord, North Carolina Wedding Photographer

2011... In Review.

So if you were to compare 2010 to 2011 in nothing but numbers... I would have increased my weddings by 300% and doubled my sessions for the year and quadripulated my inquiries! YEAH! Fortunately, I don't really just use percentages and numbers to measure the growth of Faces in Focus Photography.  Besides, I really don't know what quadripulated means since I just made that up!

Okay so what do I really say about 2011? Honestly? Like whoa. It's been an amazing year! The people I've met, and the friends I've made have made this year so unbelievable. I've grown a lot as a photographer, and as a person. I didn't think I would fall in love with photography the way I have. Or meet as many incredible people.. I love every single part of this business. Yes, even the paying taxes and saving receipts part. Don't mock! I'm serious! It's a part of running this little business and to do it without failing miserably, well I call that success!

I can't wait for 2012. I love my brides & grooms that we have already booked and I cannot wait to make more friends this year. But before I start daydreaming about what's to come, I thought it would be a nice opportunity to recap all the incredible people I've met and photographed this year.

To all of you - thank you. I can't think of a single session this year that I haven't walked away from with a new friend. You made this year AMAZING and I cannot thank you enough.

With love,

A journey... of sorts.

If you’re a photographer, you’ve probably heard about Jasmine Star. She’s the master at branding. I know exactly the type of person she is, and the kind of clients she books. She clearly states that she is “a lifestyle photographer for fabulous people.” Her blog looks like pages straight out of a magazine, her website, the same. And just this week she announced, no, not a book, like normal people. A magazine. She WROTE. A. MAGAZINE. She’s outdid her own self, and everyone is excited.

I desperately try not to compare myself to other photographers. I want to find my own path, my own style, my own brand, and my own dream. But when I see Jasmine Star, I see a woman who does that so well. And I get stuck on one thing – who am I, exactly? What makes me different? What makes Faces in Focus different from everyone else? I mean sure, in reality I’m new to the business, going on my 2nd official year (3rd if you count the year where I didn’t know which way was up). I don’t compare myself to others, but I don’t see how I stand out either!

I ask myself all the time – who do I appeal to? Who do I want to appeal to? It’s so clearly seen when you look at photographers like J* or Jonas Peterson, or Ryan Brenizer. They know who they want, what they want, and they get it. I sometimes have no idea how to answer, “Who is your ideal client?” Um… someone who likes my work, thinks I’m funny, likes to have fun, and pays me in Sour Patch Kids? I mean WHO AM I?

I guess I’m kind of on a journey right now. That’s what it feels like. I want to make it clear now. I don’t want to stand out amongst local photographers, and I don’t want to be famous. Those aren’t my sole purposes in this business. I want to be me. And I want to book clients who love me for me.

I had lunch with my amazing friend Becki, and she had quite the same questions earlier this year. She went away for a while, traversing the mountains, wrestling bears, and just being free. She came back with a renewed vigor for life and she’s making those changes to be the photographer SHE wants to be.  I’m inspired by her. By Jasmine Star. By people who go after what they want and know Exactly. Who. They. Are.

I’m happy I have my family, my dog, and my photography. Here’s hoping that I’ll stumble upon who I am at the bottom of a bag of Sour Patch Kids or something.

Guest Post | An Elon Engagement Session Film

The sun, the crisp air, jackets and coats. And, oh, the leaves!

No two ways about it, autumn is pretty awesome. But our fun-loving couple from last weekend, Kelsey & Brad, may just give the season a run for its money.

Determine who wins the awesome crown for yourself this week in our newest film below! The song is "I've Got This Friend" by the Civil Wars. This song has stood out to me since I heard it, and I’ve been looking for the perfect couple to use it for. I hope you like it too!

Face to Face: How to Plan Your Portrait Session Outfit

This past weekend, Daylights Savings Time ended. I turned the clocks back, hopped on the couch, excited that I'd get an extra hour of sleep. I even went to bed at a reasonable hour to actually ENJOY it. And then... I woke up at 6AM, approximately 1.5 hours sooner than I planned. I mean seriously ya'll? The one year I didn't waste my Daylight Savings Time running around til 2AM, using up that precious hour, and I wake up EARLY?

The irony.

BUT nevertheless I did get a few things accomplished so not all was lost. In fact I edited an entire session from Saturday, and my goodness if these guys didn't look absolutely adorable! Which brings me to my post today (5 points for a seamless segue!) - how to plan for your portrait session!

This video includes some tips about:

  1. Selecting the style for your session.

  2. Finding the right location for your style.

  3. Planning your outfits for any weather.

Now this is our very FIRST video, and we plan on making lots and lots of little tweaks, but we appreciate any comments, or suggestions! And if you have any questions you'd like us to answer, leave them in the comment box below!

Thanks! :)

Mini-Session Giveaway! (CLOSED)

It's November!! The leaves are falling, we can start to see our breath in the cold morning and the Holidays are approaching. It's just that time of year.

So I thought it was an appropriate time to hold a giveaway! Yay! Here's the 411...

Think of one person you know who needs or deserves a photography session, and tell me why. It could be for any reason, but I want to know why YOU think they deserve it. Did they just have a baby? Has Grandma never had a photograph taken with all of her grandchildren? Did your fabulous mother just beat the odds and is still here today to celebrate and keep your lives filled with love? Tell me their story.

The winner will receive a Mini Session with Faces in Focus Photography, to be silly, laugh, cuddle, and play with their favorite people in the whole wide world. AND, so will their friend. That special person who so deserves a session, gets the exact same thing. Both of you will walk away with 30 minutes of fun, an online gallery of 15 images, and a free 8x10!

There are three steps to enter the contest.

1. Post your response on our blog using the Add Comment link below.

2. Post your response on Facebook.

3. The winner is going to be chosen and announced on our Newsletter, so in order to find out if you won, you’ll have to sign up for the newsletter too, using the box below.

The contest ends at 9:00 AM on Friday November 4th. The winner will be chosen by Sunday, November 6th. So what are you waiting for? On your marks.... Hehe just kidding!
I can't wait to hear all of your amazing stories! I know choosing a winner for this is NOT going to be easy!
Happy Sharing!! :)

"I've never danced with him before."

That's what she told me, as we sat sipping lemonade at Panera, talking details about her upcoming August wedding. Maggie spoke of her father, lovingly speaking of her admiration for him.

One week before her wedding, he had a heart attack. It was scary for Maggie, for her friends, and her family. So how happy we all were to find out that her father not only was okay, but was still coming to celebrate Maggie & Mike's perfect day.

I know I personally loved meeting Maggie's father - he's quite the charmer, and SWEET as could be! Just like Maggie.

I'm so honored to see Maggie & her dad featured on The Thirty-Something Bride.

Tar Heels Networking Event | Charming Charlie

A few weeks ago, I was invited to a Networking Event in Raleigh, to meet other professionals and shop. I wasn't quite aware what they meant by shopping. You see, I've never been to a Charming Charlie before. I mean, NO ONE told me that there was a color coordinated place for OCD people to find, coordinate, and fall in love with accessories. But whoa. There is. Okay rewind, rewind!

Lisa Jacobs of Lisa Jacobs Special Events reserved a Charming Charlie for two hours, to allow us to walk around and get to know some fabulous people and vendors in the area. It was some kind of Awesome. I brought along my best friend Sarah and met quite a few lovely people!

The lovely Monique and Lisa introducing everyone to each other!

Okay now THIS is cool. Meet Jenn of the Electric Vehicle Experience. This car? Battery powered. 100%. Nice, right? It has approximately three buttons. Drive. Park. Reverse. I mean how easy is THAT!! They actually allow you to rent for a joy ride, a weekend, or for a wedding (*hint*freaking*hint*!!). Way cool. Fa reals.

This is Joe with Sweeps. He was the only guy, but not only trooped it out with the gals, he stayed and won a prize! :)

Isn't this place gorgeous and fun?!

Turns out there is one in Greensboro and I fully intend to revisit this awesome store. With my mom. Because she would loooooooove it. Like Whoa. Right Mommy?!

It was so much fun to meet such fabulous people, such as...

You guys are awesome! Hope to meet or work with all of you again soon!

Thanks for reading!

Guest Post | It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Greetings and salutations everybody, it's your friendly guest-blogger Brian!

Some love the winter, with it's layer of white that brings quiet and moments for contrasting warmth among family. Others the spring, it being hope personified and holding plenty of new chances to appreciate everything living. And then the summer is just plain fun and moments of pure joy are felt at every relaxing moment at the beach or at the local cook-out.

But above all my friends, autumn/fall is the season of all seasons! It's so nice they named it twice! It's more than the gradual hibernation of all things, it's more about the memories that have built up over time during this part of the year. That crisp smell in the air, new clothes and supplies heading off to school, all tree's last vibrant breaths in hues of yellow, red, and orange. And, more to the point, the cacophony of sights, smells, tastes, and sounds at the local fair!

Enjoy this short video that will hopefully capture some of what the fair is about to you. And be sure to stay tuned until the very end as we'll get to see our favorite photographer tame a particularly wild animal.

And I apologize in advance for the song getting stuck in your head.

Enjoy! :-D

7 Days & 7 Photographers | A Day on the Road

So how has YOUR week been? Mine has been fabulous. And why? Because it's "7 Days. 7 Photographers." week!

In case you haven't heard about it, this special week all began with a collaboration of Casie Shimanski (an Orlando wedding and lifestyle photographer) and I. Inspired by THIS blog post, we talked about getting a nice little group together to do our own versions of this "Day in the Life of" idea. And we did! Together along with 5 other fabulous #TWIPS across the world, we bring you "7 Days and 7 Photographers".

And here we are, smack in the middle of the week with DAY FOUR!

I decided to do mine on a day that I was literally traveling back from my vacation at Myrtle Beach. On this day, I managed to squeeze in shopping, a session, a four hour drive, AND sleep. So here goes!

I woke up at 6:30 AM to get dressed and head down to the beach to do a session at sunrise, then headed back to get ready and pack everything up to leave.

It was my last day on the beach and so I HAD to take some time to take it all in for a couple minutes before checking my email and watching a few minutes of Megamind (cute movie by the way!)

Then shower and packing...

Down in the elevator to check out and leave!

With GPS ready (and husband at the wheel) we headed off for some shopping. Duh.

Quick stop at McDonalds of course...

The Myrtle Beach Tanger Outlets weren't that exciting... until I found a bookstore selling Hardcover books for $2.50 each!! One hour and 10 books later...

We decided to stop at Broadway on the Beach to eat lunch with some friends.

Then it was time to head on home! We stopped for gas about an hour or so in - RIGHT on the state line! Talk about good timing!

Quick stop to pick up the kid (as in my Diva Dog Shelby).

And then home and STRAIGHT into the bed. I was so tired, I forgot to take off my glasses before snapping this photo of me!

And THAT was my day. I know, SO EXCITING! No? Oh well it was for me. :) For all you photographers, hobbyist or professional, this was a super fun project and I think all of you should take some time to try it out! It's harder than it looks, but it's definitely a lot of fun.

Stop by these lovely blogs to finish off the week!

Dreams and Randomness

I spent the last weekend in Lebanon, Virginia, photographing the wedding of these two lovebirds. And every time I blinked, I saw another reason to never, ever, ever, go home - the rolling hills, the fog glistened mornings, the fields of horses and wildflowers. It was like a dream. And I wish I could stay. In fact I told Brian (for the umpteenth time) that we were moving here someday. I even pick out the perfect hill AND the perfect horse.

Speaking of dreams, I had one that had to have lasted all night long. It was like a freaking eight hour blockbuster! There were car crashes and conspiracies, and a massive amount of drama. I don't know where it came from, but it made for a pretty interesting, albeit restless night. Random, I know.

In other randomness... This week is a pretty exciting week! Yesterday marked the beginning of "7 Days 7 Photographers"! Seven photographers from around the world, all members of #TWIPS, will be sharing a day in their life. These photographers are from all over the world, documenting each a different day in their very different lives. To keep up with the awesomeness, follow The hashtag #7Days7Photographers. You can see the first post HERE and the second HERE. Tune back in on Wednesday to see mine!

And here's the lineup for the whole week:

Sunday – Casie from Casie Photographics

Monday –  Ashley from Scobey Photography

Tuesday –  Orly from The Boutique Photographer

Wednesday – Ariana from Faces in Focus Photography

Thursday – Melissa from Melissa Dunstan Photography

Friday – Shannon from Shannon Kelley Photography

Saturday – Steph from Bubble Rock Studios

Also, in other news, today is my two year anniversary with my husband (as noted in THIS MORNING's POST). So like I said... It's a pretty exciting week.

I'm off to celebrate two good years, and cuddle with my hubby to watch some random show on Netflix. After all, isn't that what love is about? Dreams. And randomness.

Guest Post | An Experiment in Tilt-Shift and Time-Lapse

It's all Ariana's fault.

When Faces in Focus Photography first started, I knew it would be something special because of the knack and natural skill my wonderful wife had behind the lens. Session after session, wedding after wedding, I had the best time seeing her grow in her photography and the business growing as a result. But, seeing how fun it is to take that perfect shot, how rewarding it is to capture a beautiful moment between a couple, and how much there is to learn about photography, I caught the bug too!

So, fast forward to now and I'm big into photography with a special FOCUS (get it?) on videography. Hopefully you've enjoyed our recent Kessler Wedding Highlights, that's our first HD foray into this amazingly rewarding section of this art. Always looking to grow and gain experience, I tried my hand recently at faux tilt-shift and time-lapse captures during our recent vacation.

The song featured in the vid is "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel, it's all about appreciating how amazing even the most mundane moments are and "how strange it is that we are anything at all". Enjoy and, whether you like it or hate it, blame Ariana. :-D

A Low Country Wedding | Featured | Guest Blog

I'm honored to be featured as a guest blogger on Erin's blog, A Low Country Wedding. She's going out of town and I had the opportunity to help her out. If you have a moment, go stop by and leave some love! The article is entitled Three Tips to a Fabulous Engagement Session and helps to answer some quintessential questions, like whether or not you should bring your fiance to your engagement session. You know, that kind of important stuff.... Okay, no, not really - go see for yourself!
